Lodge #6
Watertown was
chartered on February 25, 1960 with 13 original members.
Since that time Lodge #6 has grown and currently has 65 members.
Its members include several law enforcement agencies: Watertown Police
Department, Codington County Sheriff's Department, SD Highway Patrol, SD
Game Fish and Parks Department, SD
Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Hamlin County Sheriff's
Department. Lodge #6 holds its
monthly meetings in Watertown, SD to
discuss lodge business.
This
Lodge is very active within the community.
For over twenty years members have been involved with the Watertown
Fourth of July parade, by tossing candy and Frisbees to people along the
parade route, and later working at the Watertown Stadium as the crowd
awaits the arrival of fireworks. During
Halloween, the Lodge has donated glow sticks to young trick-or-treaters to
promote Halloween safety. Over
the holiday season, they also hand out “food baskets” to people less
fortunate in the community, consisting of gift certificates to be spent at
a participating grocery store. Along
with donating hundreds of dollars to various community activities, civic
groups and individuals, FOP Lodge #6 provides a positive impact and
represents the Fraternal Order of Police as a proactive community
organization.
Some
of their yearly member activities include a Chili Feed, and a summer Corn
Feed, where they have great retired participation.
Members have an opportunity to bring their spouse or significant
other, and children to these events.

UPDATE
JAN '06
This
Christmas members from Watertown FOP Lodge 6 partnered up with Wal-Mart
and Pepsi to hold our first annual Shop with a Cop event. A total of
$2,000 was raised for 20 area children to buy Christmas presents.
Members of the Watertown Police Department, Codington County Sheriff’s
Office, Hamlin County Sheriff’s Office, SD Highway Patrol, and SD Game
Fish and Parks spent time with the children while they shopped.
20
children were each given $100 to spend at Wal-Mart on presents for their
families and themselves. Refreshments were also on hand for parents
as they waited for their children. Once all the shopping was done,
volunteers assisted with the wrapping of presents.
July
2005 was also time for the annual Watertown 4th of July Events which are
co-sponsored by the Watertown Chamber of Commerce and Lodge 6. The
annual events consist of a parade through Watertown, followed by
entertainment at the Watertown Stadium.
The
parade with a 120 entries started off the events for the day. People
lined the parade route for 19 blocks throughout Watertown to collect candy
and watch the parade entries as they passed by. The first parade
entry was the Lodge 6 Candy toss, which was responsible for giving out
3,000 pounds of candy to many awaiting children and adults throughout the
parade route. After the parade, events started at the Watertown
Stadium. The band “Eclipse” provided musical entertainment prior
to a fireworks display put on by Lew’s Fireworks. At the end of
the night, an estimated 4,000 people attended the events at the
stadium.
Lodge
#8 Brookings is made up of approximately 60 members from various agencies,
consisting of the Brookings Police Department, Brookings County Sheriff's
Office, SD Highway Patrol, and SDSU Police Department. We meet monthly for
fun, fellowship, and to try to find ways to give back to the Brookings
Area.
Lodge
#8 has an annual Game Feed every March, a Fishing Tourney, in May/June,
and a Golf Tourney every August. For the past several years we have also
been responsible for cleaning a section of I-29 by the Brookings Exit.
Also, I can't forget the float we put together for the annual Parade of
Lights.
With
the continued support of the good people of the State of South Dakota we
have been fortunate enough to be able to return the gifts to various
people and organizations. A following are just a few of the groups we
regularly contribute to:
-
Dare
-
Brookings
Domestic Abuse Shelter
-
Special
Olympics
-
Brookings
Area After-Prom Parties
-
Brookings
Community Fireworks (Uncle Sam Jam)
-
Halloween
Safety (glo-sticks and safety talks)
This
year Lodge #8 is going to try their athletic capabilities by sponsoring a
Co-ed Softball Team. (I think we are going to need the first-aid kits and
oxygen masks on stand-by for some of the guys!) Anyway, each year our
lodge continues to grow...physically, fiscally, and mentally. Our
long-term goal is to someday have a lodge (meeting place) to call our very
own. A place where men and women of law enforcement can come together for
meetings or just to relax. We will keep you posted!
